The crescent moon has been sighted. The Taraweeh prayers have begun. Ramadan is here.
For over a billion Muslims around the world, this month is the most sacred time of the year. It’s a period of fasting from dawn to sunset, but it is so much more than just abstaining from food and drink. It is a spiritual reset, a month of discipline, empathy, and deep connection.
More Than Fasting
At its core, Ramadan is a month of reflection. By stepping away from physical nourishment, we are reminded of the spiritual nourishment we often neglect. It’s a time to strengthen our relationship with the Quran, to pray with intention, and to work on being the best versions of ourselves.
It’s also a month of empathy. When we feel the pangs of hunger, we are reminded of those who feel it not by choice, but by circumstance. This is why charity (Zakat and Sadaqah) holds such a special place during these 30 days.
The Magic of the Community
Ask any Muslim what they love about Ramadan, and they will likely mention the community.
The Iftar Table: There is nothing quite like the moment the adhan (call to prayer) rings out at sunset. The hurried "bismillah" before biting into a date, the clinking of glasses of water, and the spread of food that brings families and friends together—it is pure barakah (blessing).
The Late Nights: The nights come alive with prayer. Whether at home or in the mosque, the quiet solitude of the night prayers (Qiyam) carries a peace that is hard to describe.
The Suhoor Solidarity: Waking up before dawn for the pre-fast meal might seem like a chore, but for many, it’s a quiet, bonding moment with family before the world wakes up.
A Simple Greeting
If you have Muslim friends, colleagues, or neighbors, a simple greeting can mean the world. You can say:
"Ramadan Mubarak" – Which means "Blessed Ramadan."
"Ramadan Kareem" – Which means "Generous Ramadan."
It acknowledges the sacrifice they are making and shows solidarity with their journey.
To everyone observing: May your fasts be easy, your prayers be accepted, and your heart be filled with peace. May this Ramadan bring you closer to your loved ones and to your faith.
Ramadan Mubarak to you and your family!
